How does it work for alumni?
Launched in August 2018, Ask Alumni is a University-wide program that you can sign up to at any time of the year. Once you submit your registration form we verify your details against our database to ensure you are alumni of the University (the definition of which can be viewed here). This can take up to two business days.
When your registration is accepted, log in to edit or complete your profile fields and set your preferences to indicate when you are available for the 30-minute conversations and the maximum number of conversations you can commit to per month.
This is a student driven program, meaning we will not match you directly with any students, instead they will be able to search for and view your profile then reach out to request a career conversation with you (called a 'meeting'). These meetings can take place via:
- Video call
- Phone call
- Email exchange
- Face to face
We encourage students to connect with as many mentors as they can to provide a broad perspective and help them make better informed decisions about their career.
When you receive a meeting request we hope you'll accept it, but you do have the option to decline a student if you simply don't have time or think they’re the wrong fit.
What is expected of me as a mentor?
Be realistic with your time when setting your preferences. This will help students to plan the meetings at a convenient time for both of you.
Be aware that students in this program may be from any academic discipline, any stage of their educational journey and any background, and because of this they may be interested in chatting to you for many different reasons. Keep an open mind, try to understand your mentees' motivations and share your experiences in a positive and encouraging way.
Who can see my profile information?
All current students 18 years and older with a University of Melbourne login can sign up for Ask Alumni and view the visible sections of your profile. They won't be able to see your direct contact information until you accept a meeting request from them.
Other alumni mentors in Ask Alumni won't be able to view your profile. If you would like to start or join a conversation with other mentors, you can do this through the Forums feature where your posts will show as anonymous. This is especially useful for sharing your mentoring questions and tips.
For the purposes of ensuring the program continues to meet all expectations, program administrators will also be able to view your profile information and your activities within the program.
