Student FAQs

How do you decide which students are matched with a mentor?

To be accepted into the program you need to meet the eligibility criteria. You also need to submit a detailed application form, which articulates how your motivation for participating in the program aligns with the program objectives.

Each year we have a pool of volunteer mentors from a diverse range of backgrounds. We match students and mentors based on preferences, including industry, study area, gender and any other criteria indicated. If your preferences do not match the available volunteers or you did not submit a detailed application you may not be matched with a mentor.

Can I choose my mentor?

The program coordinators will match you with a mentor. You will not be able to choose your mentor, however we do take into consideration the preferences provided on your application form. If you have any questions prior to the matching process, please speak directly to the program coordinators.

How will I be matched with a mentor?

We review mentor and mentee application and then we match you with a mentor based on the information provided, relating to industry, career experience, subject area and more.

I want a mentor from a particular background/gender/industry is this possible?

It is possible, however the aim of the mentoring relationship is to expand your knowledge of career options and the working world. Often you can still learn a lot from a mentor in another field of work, so we ask mentees to keep an open mind.

While you can be prescriptive when completing your application form, please note, if you are very specific about the characteristics and field of work of your mentor it could limit your chances of being matched.

How can I apply to become a mentee?

Applications are now open, apply here!

What is the deadline to apply?

Applications will be closing on 31 May 2024.

What is the time commitment?

Once matched, it is expected that you initiate at least 3 meetings with your mentor during semester. Meetings can be 30 minutes or longer, depending on the individual preferences. You may email your mentor to discuss the frequency of your meetings, this can be negotiated at your first meeting.

Between your meetings with your mentor, you will likely want to take some time to reflect on your discussions and to try to put some of the learnings or advice into action.

Where will I meet my mentor?

The format of the meetings (in person/online or a combination of both) is to be discussed in the initial communication.  Should you choose to meet via an online platform, we recommend utilizing web conferencing software such as Skype and Zoom.

Mentees: you should schedule these meetings with your mentor at times that you both agree on

Can I apply for more than one mentoring program?

If you meet the eligibility for several Mentoring at Melbourne programs (e.g. STEM and Access Connections) you can go ahead and register for more than one program. Please note that means you may potentially be matched with more than one mentor and you would need to manage the associated time commitments and expectations.

We also recommend using the Ask Alumni mentoring program for additional career mentoring support.
